Sound pollution aside, what is the "best" mechanical keyboard for software work?

I've had bucking springs and mx blues and browns, but there are many new switches I am not familiar with. What is considered the "best"?

there is no "best". To narrow down your choices decide :

1- You like clicky noise ?
2- Usage ? work, gaming or both ? what type of gaming ?

Thanks. I did not mean to be unclear in my first post so let me rewrite it:
    1. Without considering noise
    2. For writing software.

WASD looks pretty good but I never really understood why people would mess about with keycaps. Is it simply vanity? Just want a good keyboard to type with. Even now I'm typing on one that is an RGB backlight abomination (seems I can't buy anything without RBG backlighting these days o_O)

Then I would recommend you these

Razer BlackWidow Tournament Edition Chroma V2 Or CORSAIR K70 RGB MK.2
tactile and silent so it is great for typing too.

Logitech G710+ has rings so no noise at all

    Razer Ornata Chroma: Mecha-Membrane
The keys has noise like clicking a mouse button but it feel good in typing and has a very goof wrist rest

You asked for mechanical but for typing only you may like ergonomic keyboard like
    Logitech K350 2.4Ghz Wireless Keyboard
It is wireless so you are not limited with a wire

What is left is your personal preferences

Thanks warax. I was hoping in my post to ask for recommendations where noise is not taken under account. Since for most of the keyboards you commented mostly about the sound, would your recommendations change if sound were not taken into account?

Oh I've seen these, can you write a bit more about them? How long have you been using them? Why is it your favorite? etc. etc.

They look very cool. The price is fine for me.

Drakken Prothero Spektrum, Modular RGB Mechanical Gaming Keyboard, Programmable with 16.8 Million Colors (Kailh Brown- Tactical)

    Razer Huntsman Elite: Opto-Mechanical Switch

It was just based on an recent online research I did - so till now I've not pulled the trigger & bought one yet. But these following reviews actually sums it up nicely:

"Optimus Popularis Keyboard" is not mechanical keyboard. It is more a fun gadget and would be great for gaming. Other than that, not much use. The fact that every key has an LCD screen under it makes it a nice gimmick keyboard, not a great keyboard. It shouldn't be typed on daily.

I went to Best Buy today and played with a keyboard they have with MX Browns. I only typed briefly but immediately I felt the switch was less crisp, a noticeably more "gummy" feeling compared to my blues.

Some people are recommending grays, and other heavier switches. I liked my buckled spring keyboard (before I lost it) so I would consider something heavier.

Which switches are the fastest to type on for experienced typists, in raw WPM?

Thanks. How about you yourself? While reading about these, I've seen that becoming accustomed can take some weeks. How long did it take you?

There are some layout for mech key (full size, TKL, 60%), and with many kinds of sw from manufactures. Cherry for switch and Leopold is the manufacture I recommend.

That one looks great. USB pass-through, volume roller. How is the palm rest? I've historically taken them off.

MX Blue switches version looks like it's RGB-only:
