Do you remember your first warez app?

For me it was Tabit back in the 90s. A friend shared a pirated copy with a license file.

This was back in the days of AIM/AOL punters, SubSeven and Netbus.

After this I moved on to bigger stuff like Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver.

I recall WinRAR first when I got my first PC. I kept closing the evaluation pop up every time I opened it :D Then I used a portable copy of dreamweaver to create some graphic stuff. I was gonna return back my first PC because I failed to write some MP3 to a CD can you believe that? Then Nero Express came to rescue which was about 13MB or something at the time.

Haha I forgot how many CDs I burned back then. We would create mix tapes and share them at school. I also had a copy of Nero and I remember Alcohol 120 being popular on Limewire.

But i remember for sure that my first computer was gift, with Windows Me! :)

Gone of those days - there are really passions for reverse engineering. My first used cracked was Norton antivirus, ZA antivirus.

@Am4t3uR Oh yea I definitely had a cracked copy of Winamp and all times

@Wonderman it seems like the passion for reversing is more common in Russia. Almost dead in the US it seems :/

It was 20 years back. OS was win 98. Ram was 16 MB & 14" color monitor only floppy disk and CD ROM (Not writer).

I was badly in need of crack for a local software (now it it obsolete 16 bit) to type in a vernacular language. I asked many people who owned a computer but none was able to guide / provide me crack. One computer Engineering student gave a hint that his friends get cracks from astalavista.box.sk site (Now it not available). I went that site and found nothing. There was a contact button on their site. I typed a message saying that I understood that cracks are available on your site but didn't find anything. And I got reply stating that in the search box type the soft name and click search button. That was my computer knowledge those days and finally got crack I needed.

Yes. cracks.am was the best (may be only) source with lots of porn pages.

In the second or later stage there was a program called Serials 2000

I don't really remember the first Warez I shared or received, but I can surely remember those days, Sub7, ProRat, and the golden era... I also remember why I wanted to become a Software Reverse Engineer, if that applies too, you see, when you have so much "freedom" in doing something you like to do, and when you spend may sleepless nights trying to figure out something and in the end it results at your favor, that feeling is an experience out of this world ;)

I got into reversing mostly because of games, I wanted to reverse and understand how games were made, network protocols, etc., etc. private servers, of course; But now that I have all this knowledge and still improving, and enhancing the prior experience, I don't know it all, the Reversing Scene, it's indeed an Engineering, it's a whole different world, it's an art.

So now I just apply my reversing skills to games and everything I can, and of course poverty is another reason I do reversing, I don't have money to afford all the products/softwares I would like to buy/get.

I remember everything was DOS. Maybe I was still on v5 or v5.5, I don't know. Then I stumbled on that fancy graphical interface, and I thought "interesting..." As we all did back then, I "copied" the whole directory on multiple 5'1/4 disquettes, and tested at home. It was Windows 3.1! And it worked flawlessly, with simple and blunt copy of files!
    lol
I remember getting a flowchart software to try to get my very own Kelly Lebrock from that movie:

And the internet was not that developed back then, so getting porn was really hard! lol

I think first warez that I used was office 97 and winamp and OS's were pirated too xD.
I recently watched a tv show called "TheScene" and it instantly reminded me of old days. XD

I got involved into warez scene in the mid nineties..

learnt a little bit of x86 assembly programming after discovering fravia's (I think his name was Frederick Ravia) reversing/cracking university. learnt a lot about reverse engineering by following the great tutorials written by +orc (IIRC Old Red Cracker). learnt how to use softice debugger, w32dasm and other tools.

The first app I cracked/patched successfully was winzip32 (don't recall the version) but it was mostly dumb luck... I was flipping registers here & there and noop-ing asm instructions randomly without actually knowing what I was doing.... then I cracked a hex editor app (forgot the name of the app) all by myself.

also dabbled in writing win32 viruses assembly... was mesmerised by polymorphic viruses and how they avoided detection by AVs... I think there was a pretty clever virus in the early 2000s which embedded itself within free blocks of codepages of an executable, thereby avoiding any change in executable size.. the source code was released later and it was a cool read....

I vaguely remember waiting for newest issue of all those bbs/web-based haxxor magazines... phrack, 2600 and so many others...

that culture is long gone... :)
